Application Process & Interviews at AECOM

My interview was more conversational and I was initially hired on a 6 week paid internship which resulted in full time work.

I applied for an undergraduate position initially. The process involved: submission of a CV and Key Selection Criteria, a telephone interview and a face-to-face interview. When I applied for a graduate position, there was no formal process as I applied directly to the local office manager whom I already knew.

Applied to a role within the company but in another country from a job advertisement. Got denied from that role and was contacted by HR in the city I am in. Was asked to come in for an interview and perform some psychometric tests. Attended one formal interview and a meet and greet with the team a couple days after. Was offered the role a week after that.

Online assessment, telephone interview, face-to-face interview. Very happy not to have to go to an assessment centre.

A phone interview followed by a group interview (day) and then a final interview.

I only had one interview with three people. I did not go through the standard graduate intake.

I did not go through the usual hiring process. I had a single interview with my manager and the area manager of the office.

Arduous and questionable veracity. Involved phone interviews, online assessments, several hours of assessment centre work, and face to face interviews

Informal phone calls, and one interview.

It was quite lengthy and took a lot of patience in between process and stages.

Several stages of application - resume, online tasks, face-to-face interview.

Had a video conference call with employer. Spoke at length about work opportunities and how I could fit into the business.

Similar to other organisations

Upload application, questions answered, online interview process where 2 questions were asked, a quick phone interview with HR, then face to face (skype for me) interview, then i was hired!

Online game, 2 phone interviews, 2 in-person interviews

Quite process focussed - which is to be expected at an organisation of this scale but it slowed things down

Phone interview with HR personnel, online assessments, assessment centre with team leader, final meeting with boss with job offer and discussion of expectations for the job role.

I don't remember what was asked during the first interview. Probably about teamwork, meeting timelines, safety, goals for the future.

Mainly behavioural questions related to work/university and what my goals are/where I want my career to go

Why I would like to work for the company, what projects would I like to work on, what was my favourite subject at uni and why.

Where do you see yourself in 5 and 20 years? Why acoustics? Why AECOM? Tell us about you? What are your soft skills that you need to work on?

When have you felt challenged? What sort of boss would you like? Tell us a bit about yourself?

Why do you want to work for AECOM? What motivates you? What sort of projects interest you?

What my previous experience was. Where I would like to work in their team. What did I want to get out of the role. What my professional interests were.

Previous experience, what I found challenging at university, what team sports that I play, where I want to be in 10 years.

Varied, from employee expectations, previous experience, through to 'how would you design a tower out of these pieces of spaghetti?' and 'if I represent the city of Sydney wanting to redevelop a landfill site, what questions would you ask of me to formulate your bid for acquiring that work as a designer?'

Few technical questions, mainly personal and university related questions

Questions around how I: manage my time, implement safety awareness, juggle multiple tasks as well as questions about what I know about the business

Why I was interested in the industry, what were my career aims, what management style did I like.

Numerous questions about my experiences in and out of my studies, personal attributes, my interests, and my knowledge of AECOM and the industry I'd be working in

Mostly about experience of projects and software that I can use

Relevant experience.

What is my passion, why do I want to work here, how would AECOM support me in my career

What work experience I had obtained, what are my discipline interests.

What subjects i liked at uni, what are my strengths/weaknesses. etc. can't remember any more.

What are you passionate about? Why do you want to join our organisation? What are your ambitions? Tell me about a time when you experienced a challenge.

Have a good understanding of the role that you might be hired for.

Think of answers to all of the standard behavioural questions before the interview.

Research the company and learn about what kind of projects AECOM works on. Come ready to talk about your passions and aspirations.

Enquire about the role and responsibilities of the position before the interview/application process. Attain as much additional basic training (first aid, licences etc) as you can.

Research the company and understand the projects that they work on.

Try as hard as you can to get experience prior to applying. This makes an enormous impact on your ability to be able to respond to the work you may do, as you actually have an idea of what it entails. Also just be yourself and don't try to be someone you aren't, fake people are easy to spot. Plus you'll get caught out if you lie, I haven't but it would be obvious as to those who have experience and those that don't. This is of course not to say you cannot get in without experience. You just realise the value of the experience once you have it and you also gain confidence from your experience if you are good at what you do.

Research the company and know some of their projects

Appreciate the big picture, and how your skillset fits into that. As a grad, they are interested in both what value you can bring on day 1, but more importantly what your aspirations are for the longer future and whether that meshes with their own.

Knowledge about the company relevant to your disciple area. Do your research so you can come prepared with questions that will really impress the panel.

Be honest and genuine about what you like and dislike.

I recommend researching how the company will suit your work style, look at expansion past your skills at present and how the company will help you achieve their goals and your personal goals.

Make sure to include interests that are outside of work, e.g. volunteering or sport.

Be yourself and demonstrate how your interests are aligned with the Company Values.

Number one rule is to always be honest, people will always find out if you are lying. AECOM is a technical consulting company, if applying as an engineer, you should have strong technical ability in order to succeed.

Say you're willing to relocated/ be seconded

Be open to learn things even though you trained in something else. you never know what doors may open

Be yourself, let your personality shine and back that up with any related experience. Do some research and understand what your role entails.

Work on being well rounded, team player.

Speak with professionals who work in the industry and get to know the type of work that is typically undertaken.
