At the end of your graduate program, you'll be supported to transition into a role which best suits your capabilities and interests.

Pros and cons of working at Optus AU

Pros

  • The people and the meaningful work.

  • At Optus flexibility and support would be the best things about working. The amount of support that I get including mentorship, training and education really helps me in finding my way through my career and my life, the flexibility to choose what I want to do, and also when I come to work (within reason) really puts me at ease every morning when I wake up.

  • The best thing about Optus is the great work culture and the awesome opportunities available to graduates. The two year graduate program really allows you to explore all the different areas of the industry as you progress through the four rotations. You can even do a rotation overseas if you wish! But one thing that really stands out is the quality people who you get to interact with in the projects day by day - it makes you look forward to getting up in the morning!

  • Work life balance initiatives and culture are great. I have also enjoyed working in the teams I have worked with.

  • The rotational program is really great. I'm still not sure what area of HR I want to specialise in so it gives me a great way to try out my options before settling into a team. There's also an opportunity to rotate internationally which is exciting! Optus as a culture is just amazing as well. We have entertainment on campus (yep, campus) every week, and so many free events it's always fun. My first rotation also had me working on projects which were then launched to the entire company so its high profile work that keeps you really engaged!

Cons

    • Red tape: as with all big organisations there are a lot of internal control measures that are in place, which means that to get things done, I need to get approval from a lot of people.

    • The previous outsourcing model in some work groups means there is a skill gap and it can be challenging when trying to have fast turnaround on new initiatives.

    • Sometimes the systems are hard to understand or can be overly and unnecessarily convoluted making simple tasks harder.

    • Optus is a large business so has to deal with the red tape delays I imagine most other large companies are dealing with. There's often a lot of different levels or individuals who need to sign off on actions which can take a lot of time. We're also very bound by SingTel in a lot of our decision making and systems which can be frustrating, particularly in times of change.

    • Slight minus would be working out at North Ryde away from your friends who work in the city, however the campus is amazing with restaurants and bars, and the company is great at organising social events, which more than makes up for it.
