What is our Internship Program?

Our paid ten-week program is a great way to explore a career with Westpac Group and give you a taste of what it is like to work for us. It is designed to ensure that our interns get an insight into the banking and finance industry – allowing you to make an informed career decision. Whichever business area you choose, you will find a worthwhile investment of your time this summer. Plus, what could be more rewarding than the possibility to return to university with your graduate job offer in hand?

Am I Eligible?

We welcome applications from university students in their penultimate year of an undergraduate or post graduate degree that are due to complete their studies by December 2019. We also ask that all applicants hold Australian permanent residency or citizenship. The program runs for 10 weeks from December to February and talented interns will also have the opportunity to be considered for the Graduate Program in 2020.

What is Risk?

You will work across a broad network of stakeholders and learn how to negotiate, collaborate and share your analytical and problem solving skills to deliver the best outcome for the business.

Your internship will be in one of our risk teams where you will build your experience and grow your network. Interns may work on projects such as:

  • Developing a business risk report or dashboard, gaining a solid understanding of key risk metrics, and how end users make insightful decisions around risk
  • Determining the risk/control matrix and procedures to support a new regulatory standard for risk, developing skills in interpreting prudential standards and the application of these to the bank’s products and processes
  • Implementing regulatory change initiatives and working with the business to ensure new requirements are understood, complied with and embedded into risk and compliance plans

You will receive a ‘best-in-class’ experience understanding the foundations of the Group Risk Function. Supported through on-the-job training, mentoring and attending workshops that strengthen your Risk knowledge, capability and skills.

Pros and cons of working at Westpac Group AU

Pros

  • Diverse experiences

  • The opportunities for career advancement, high performance culture

  • Experience & exposure to different areas

  • Great opportunities for networking Flexible work hours Is customer focus and does live by its values

  • Very flexible working arrangements, good culture

Cons

    • level of administrative processes

    • The structure of the graduate program, requires a little more clarity.

    • A lot of technology work is outsourced.

    • Very few international opportunities. Time it takes to get things done, bureaucracy.

    • Guidance seems to depend more on the team you're in and the people around you than HR. The graduate program seems to be heavily dependent on the stream managers - with little involvement from the wider graduate HR group.
