An AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences degree, or equivalent, completed within the last two years:

• with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units (i.e. 0.75 EFTSL) of mathematics courses, excluding 1000-level courses (i.e. introductory undergraduate courses), with the highest marks.

• Completion of at least eight 2000- and 3000-level courses in the subject area mathematics, with at least four 3000-level courses or equivalent

• With the written approval of an identified supervisor for the research project

Admission requirements

At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not automatically guarantee entry. 

Applicants must present a Bachelor degree or international equivalent in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0.

In line with the university's admissions policy and strategic plan, an assessment for admission may include competitively ranking applicants on the basis of specific academic achievement, English language proficiency and diversity factors. 

Academic achievement & English language proficiency

The minimum academic requirement for full entry and enrolment is a Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0. 

However, applicants will first be ranked on a GPA ('GPA1') that is calculated using all but the last semester (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes. 

If required, ranking may further be confirmed on the basis of: 

• a GPA ('GPA2') calculated on the penultimate and antepenultimate semesters (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes; and/or

• demonstrating higher-level English language proficiency. 

Prior to enrolment in this ANU program, all students who gain entry will have their Bachelor degree reassessed, to confirm minimum requirements were met.

For the purposes of admission ‘cognate’ is to be defined as any of the following:

i.   Accounting, Business And Management, Sales And Marketing, Tourism, Office Studies, Banking, Finance And Related Fields, Management And Commerce, Political Science And Policy Studies, Studies In Human Society, Human Welfare Studies And Services, Behavioural Science, Law, Justice And Law Enforcement, Librarianship, Information Management And Curatorial Studies, Language And Literature, Philosophy And Religious Studies, Economics And Econometrics, Sport And Recreation, Society And Culture.

Students must complete the pre-sessional component to continue to the initial component. Students must complete all courses in the initial component and achieve a minimum 50% weighted average mark to continue to the concluding component. Students who do not complete all courses in the initial component or do not achieve a minimum 50% weighted average mark in the initial component will be transferred to the Graduate Diploma of Public Policy.

Applications for course credit
Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit. Applicants with a Graduate Diploma or Bachelor degree with Honours in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 48 units (one year) of credit. Credit may also be available for relevant work experience.

An AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree or equivalent, completed within the last two years:

• in a cognate discipline
• With the requirements specified for admission to the Finance Honours Specialisation.

The number of places available in the honours plan may be limited by the Dean due to supervisory capacity.

To be admitted to the Master of Philosophy program you will be required to have completed at least a four-year Australian degree or equivalent with a result of at least upper second class Honours or equivalent and demonstrate the capacity to undertake independent research.

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis. Admission to undergraduate degrees is based on meeting the ATAR requirement or an equivalent rank derived from the following qualifications and including any eligible adjustments:

- An Australian year 12 qualification or international equivalent; OR

- A completed Associate Diploma, Associate Degree, AQF Diploma, Diploma, AQF Advanced Diploma, Graduate Certificate or international equivalent; OR

- At least one standard full-time year (1.0 FTE) in a single program of degree level study at an Australian higher education institution or international equivalent; OR

- An approved tertiary preparation course unless subsequent study is undertaken.

Entry requirements

Domestic School-leavers

Domestic students completing an Australian Year 12 or the IB program (November session) in Australia in 2019 apply directly to The Australian National University by submitting an Admission, Scholarships and Accommodation application here. All students will still need to meet the published entry requirements for the program they have applied for.

 In addition to meeting the published entry requirements, school leavers are required met the co-curricular or service requirement (CCS). The CCS functions as a threshold that is either met or not met, you can learn more about the CCS and check if you’ve met the CCS requirement here.

Domestic Non-School leavers

Domestic non-school leavers (including students transferring to ANU, mature age applicants and students who are otherwise not a school-leaver) can apply to ANU via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

Additional Requirements

Students must maintain a Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of at least 3.50 in order to remain enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours in Actuarial Studies and Economics). Students who do not maintain a CAP of at least 3.50 will be transferred to the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies.Further information on the calculation of the CAP can be found at http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/education-at-nus/modular-system.html. For the purpose of calculating the CAP at any point during the degree, the average mark in ANU courses is converted to a Grade Point in the NUS system by the following formula:Grade Point (subject to a maximum of 5) = (Average ANU course mark + 10) / 20The CAP at any time is calculated as the average of the ANU CAP and the NUS CAP, weighted by the number of semesters completed at each institution.For the purpose of calculating the CAP at the completion of the degree, the same approach as above is used, with ACST4031 - Actuarial Control Cycle 1 , ACST4032 - Actuarial Control Cycle 2 , ACST4062 - Actuarial Data Analysis and the highest mark in a STAT 3000-level course counting double towards the ANU CAP.

Students who do not have the written agreement of an identified supervisor one calendar year in advance, or whose agreed supervisor either subsequently leaves the university or is on leave from the university, will be transferred to the Master of General and Applied Linguistics.

Applied Linguistics, Audiology, Communication Studies, International Communication Studies, Languages, Language Teaching, Lexicography, Linguistics, Speech Pathology, TESOL from an Australian tertiary institution or its international equivalent, Translating/Interpreting

You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate that you have research experience equivalent to these qualifications, for example, through postgraduate study and including competence in a relevant language, cultural knowledge and work experience in Asia or the Pacific.

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy program you are required to have completed a relevant degree with H1 (first class) Honours (or equivalent). Students with upper 2nd class honours (H2A) may be eligible for admission and are encouraged to apply. Applicants seeking to apply for a scholarship must have achieved the minimum result of an H1 Honours (or equivalent) to be considered.
